Sounds like he's being an idiot. I'm going to take a wild guess it was same variation on "I was trying to protect you." People do the dumbest shit trying to protect each other instead of just being honest.
Also relationships and feelings are terrifying, so there's that.
[ Talking about playing with puppies is a lot easier than talking about talking about feelings, or just talking about feelings. Diablo, at least, seems to be aware that he is being paid attention to or, rather, become the topic of conversation, because he stops trying to inhale Claire's nose and chin at the exact moment of Kate's movement toward them. ]
Yes, god, please. [ She sounds exasperated, buried, and she gets her hands under Diablo's legs enough to manhandle him to the floor. He's still pick-up-able, but he's getting bigger and squirmier every day. She needs to start him on a training regime if she ever wants him to be useful in medbay. (If she is ever invited back to medbay.) ] He's great but he's exhausting.
[ She's aware that it sounds like she's describing a newborn. ]
Don't you want to know what happened and why he didn't tell you about it? Do you want me to talk to him? [ They can do this middle school style if she'd really rather. ]
So that you can make an informed decision about whether or not you're going to cut him out of your life instead of an angry kneejerk reaction you might regret later.
[ Kate doesn't spend a lot of time in the gardens but she tracks them down. She's got her bow with her and quiver hanging from one hip, but it's hard to say if Emma caught her at the range or if she brought them just for this trip. She takes them off when she's in site, setting them carefully down so she can drop to a seat beside Emma. She's near enough that their shoulders brush but she doesn't touch her other than that just yet. ]
[ Glancing sidelong, Kate's presence doesn't seem to brighten Emma's despondent look. Just the opposite, even. One more person that she she loves, that she can and will lose, sooner or later. ]
[ It's more or less a rhetorical question; cynicism may not suit Kate but there's no denying this much. She's not done trying to help fix this and make Emma (and Hook) see sense and talk this over, but she gets the feeling that really isn't what Emma needs just at this moment. It might be she doesn't need an arm thrown around her shoulders either, but Kate's going to give that alternative a shot. ]
They're really not worth the effort. This is why casual is perfect.
[ Kate is definitely the best person to take relationship advice from for sure.
She shifts onto the floor, folding her legs in front of her and scooping Diablo up into her lap before he has time to wonder what's happening. He's big and squirmy but Kate has fast hands and more patience with puppies than people. She plays with his paws and scratches his belly and ducks her head low to talk to him in an undertone and overall seems to forget for a minute that Claire is in the room and they are having a conversation. ]
[ She shakes her head, glancing away and rubbing her hand over her mouth, back to push her hair behind her ear. Worrying at her lip, she hunches her shoulders ambiguously. ]
Ever since I got to Storybrooke, it's been like … Even when we win, we lose. All magic has ever done is take the people I care about away from me. I can't do that again.
[ Emma shrugs her shoulders and Kate sets her arm around them. She is actually a little concerned about it getting flinched off but she does it with confidence, like it's totally normal (because it kind of should be, right?). ]
That sounds rough. Like it'd just wear you down after a while.
[ Though she shrinks under Kate's touch, shaking her head and trying to laugh through her obvious shaky distress, she does not shrug her arm off entirely. The laugh is short, sheepish, and humorless. Laughing at herself. At how ridiculous she feels in this moment, like a child. ]
Not like this ship does. Compared to the Tranquility, even Neverland was a caribbean vacation. [ Which only makes it that much scarier to have Hook and her mother here where they can get hurt. Only makes it that much scarier to know she might keep losing them. ]
