[ She gets to wait a few minutes for another message, as Kate attempts to come up with the sort of reply that's clearly expected. It involves a lot of blank staring and a half-dozen versions deleted, none more than a word or two long. Eventually she gives up.

And sends a photo instead. It's just a tease, a narrow shot of dark jeans unzipped, a sliver of pale skin between waistband and tee, and a hand slid into lacy purple panties. Better? ]
