1) Part One: Sirius, Lily, Severus, & I attended boarding school together, 1971–1978. The other three wizards aboard are from the 1990s. Harry is Lily's son. Last I saw him he was barely verbal.

Our school sorts students into different houses. It isn't very big. There are four houses, around ten students in each per year. Sirius, Lily, & I were in Gryffindor. Harry & Hermione will be/are/were. (Tenses are very confusing here.) Severus & Draco are Slytherins. The houses compete a lot. I know that sounds petty, and it usually is, but a lot of families have had children in the same house for ages & it becomes very personal.

I wasn't there, but Sirius & our friend James (if Sirius & I were brothers, Sirius & James would be conjoined twins) met Severus on the train on our first day of school, when we were eleven, and they had some sort of disagreement about Gryffindor vs. Slytherin. Even if nothing else had ever come into it, I think that would have been that, as far as their ever getting along.

2) Does it have to be just for a particular secret, or could you bind someone in other ways, about a subject or an abstract 'you can't help them' or 'you can't lie about X' sort of thing?

2) It has to be something fairly specific, for practicality's sake. We use it most often to hide locations. We do have a potion to compel honesty, though, and a spell that makes a vow unbreakable.

1) Part Two: They fought the whole time were were in school together. I mean, I didn't help, either. I made fun of Severus a bit, and I nearly killed him once when he was following me around looking to have me thrown out or something. (Werewolves aren't usually allowed at school.) Severus & Lily were friends & James fancied Lily a lot, which didn't help either. & Severus was himself. I would have believed it if someone told me he tortured small animals.

We all should have grown out of it, though, & we didn't. I think that's where the war matters. I told you that my mum not being a witch was sort of contentious at home. People care a lot about blood status. They had a small war over it on the continent in the 40s. My grandfather died during it. We had a bigger one in the U.K. beginning around 1970. Dark Wizard trying to overthrow the government so he could kill or subjugate nonmagical people and wizards with nonmagical parents, that old song & dance.

I don't mean to be flippant. That sounded flippant. It's awful. We grew up with it, though.

The house rivalries were a lot about sports, but it was also about that. Slytherin always valued blood purity more than the others. Not all pureblood families are that way, but a lot of old families that care about blood status have also traditionally been Slytherins. So I think the house rivalry was worse than it usually is, while we were in school.

When we left we all fought in the war. Sirius is here from when we were still Seventh Years, but he knows what's coming. Lily is from just before it ends, & I'm from after. Severus is from a few years later than I am. He switched sides in the end, & I don't think he's a threat to anyone here now, but the Dark magic & all of that is why Sirius hates him so much. Everything else is why Severus hates us so much. I think Lily doesn't hate anyone at the moment. I'd rather not talk to Severus when I can avoid it, but I think he's sorry about the worst of it. Plus he makes the potion that keeps me from chewing my own legs off every cycle, which is kind of him.

There's another war later. I don't know so much about that one, except that a lot of it is the same, so that would be why Draco seems to hate all of us.

I ate an entire box of biscuits in the time it took to write that.

2) I suspect that their prohibitions are a little different and less specific, but I wonder what would happen if you gave Resnik the truth potion? Is there a way to undo this sort of spell?

1) Okay, that is a much more complicated story. You know you could've switched to voice and not typed it, right? Initial questions: a) I'm assuming/hoping you mean you almost killed him accidentally? b) Which side did Severus switch to/from? I'd never call him nice but I find animal-torturing wizardNazi hard to believe, too. c) So what's Lily's problem, then? She always seems to be shouting at someone on the network.

Maybe if you hadn't kept stopping to eat biscuits it wouldn't have taken so long.

I needed them to sustain me through all the typing. I don't think I'd have made it otherwise.

2) I'm not much of a potioneer, I don't know if we can grow the ingredients here, & we would have to find her first, but it's worth thinking about. I don't remember all of Veritaserum's limitations. It won't break the Fidelius Charm -- the one with the soul secret -- but it's powerful. Unbreakable Vows can be broken if you're willing to die for it.

3) Do you bring your bow?

1) Writing about it is easier. a) I couldn't have helped it at the time, no. b) They aren't Nazis. They called themselves Death Eaters. He switched from their side to ours, & I don't think he ever really tortured animals. (Though I haven't asked. Maybe I should.) In any case, it isn't something I think a lot of people need to know. He's done all right here. c) That's just Lily. She shouted at James plenty & still married him, so it doesn't mean she doesn't love you.

1. Death Eaters sounds like a garage metal band. This all seems very complicated but at the same time not all that complicated. I guess I'm left wondering whether if he genuinely joined your side in the end any of it really necessitates a feud carrying over to a situation like this.

2. Would you be able to detect if a spell similar to these had been placed on someone?

3. Always. The logistical issues reward flexibility.
